fries recipe

French Fries. I could write a book about them. They are ridiculously amazing and embarrassingly addictive. And quite honestly, I don’t know how to control myself around them. The phrase “everything in moderation?” Yeah, that’s out the window when it comes to french fries. But here’s the thing. French fries aren’t particularly healthy. They’re usually fried and loaded with salt. So what’s a fry-addict to do when the cravings hit hard?

I’ve got the perfect solution: homemade french fries. Don’t worry – these aren’t those sad french fries that are bland and completely lackluster. Nope, these bad boys are full of flavor, are perfectly crisp on the outside, and deliciously soft on the inside. With this homemade version, you won’t feel too bad chowing down on a second plate. Or third.

It’s all about the seasoning:

Olive oil. Olive oil adds antioxidants to your french fries. It also adds a depth of flavor and helps you achieve a crispy texture.

Garlic salt. It makes all the difference. Trust me. This will take your ordinary french flies on to a whole ‘nother level.

Italian seasoning. Again, for added flavor. Now you see? I wasn’t kidding when I said these are anything but bland.

Black pepper. No french fry is complete with a touch of ground black pepper.

Paprika. This is optional. But I enjoy the slightly sweet, slightly spicy kick,

Finally, after you season your fries, you’ll place them on a baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes. No frying here. And I promise you won’t miss it either. These are just as good, if not better.

I hope you enjoy these easy, homemade french fries. Fair warning though – these might be requested quite often!

What do I need to make this recipe?

  • 4-5 medium potatoes, cut into strips
  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)

fries

How to make Homemade French Fries:

  • Wash and dry 5 medium potatoes. Use a sharp knife to cut potatoes into long thin strips.  Place potato strips into a medium-sized bowl, add cold water just to cover the potatoes, and let them stand for 20 minutes.  This step will help to get rid of some of the potato starch and your fries will turn out crispy.

fries

  • In 20 minutes drain the potatoes, place them onto a clean kitchen towel, and let them dry.

fries

  • Put the potatoes back into the bowl, add 2 Tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, 2 teaspoons of garlic salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and paprika (if using).  Mix well with a spoon trying not to break the potato strips.

fries

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and put the seasoned potato strips on the sheet in a single layer.
  • Bake at 425F for 30-40 minutes, depending on the thickness of your fries.

fries

  • As soon as the potato strips start browning on the edges and become crispy on the outside and soft inside, your fries are ready!  Take them out of the oven, and serve hot. They start to lose the crispiness as they cool down.

Notes

Soaking the potatoes helps get rid of some of the potato starch and make the fries a little crispy.
