Homemade marshmallows are what I like to call these fluffy, airy, and melt-in-your-mouth creations. If your throat is itching, grab a marshmallow! The gelatin helps soothe throat pain.
I haven’t been baking lately, but these marshmallows are definitely on my to-do list for this winter. As kids come home from the chilly air, they love hot chocolate and these marshmallows are a great addition to homemade hot chocolate!
What are These Marshmallows Made Out of
Water: As simple as it gets
Agar-agar: A non-GMO gelatin substitute
Powdered sugar (aka confectioners sugar): Powdered sugar sweetens things up and helps the recipe come together.
Dry vanilla: Vanilla the flavor. Very important: it must be dry vanilla and not liquid vanilla extract.
Egg whites: These are a must-have to make this recipe, they are also low-calorie and a strong protein choice.
What do I need to make this recipe?
- 1 cup water
- 2 tsp agar-agar
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 tsp dry vanilla
- 3 egg whites (room temperature)
Directions on How to Make Marshmallows at Home
1. In an electric mixer, on speed to high, beat together 3 egg whites. Add the vanilla of 1/4 teaspoons. Whip until the mixture forms to soft peaks and fluffy white.
2. Meanwhile, on the stove, bring to a boil in a medium-size pot 1 cup of water and 2 teaspoons of agar-agar.
3. Whisk into the pot 4 cups of powdered sugar, and boil for exactly 6 minutes. Take off the heat and add to the egg whites, with the mixer on low speed, mix together for another 3 minutes.
4. You can shape the marshmallows into any shape you want. I used a pastry bag with a decorating tip.
5. Pipe marshmallow mixture onto two large baking sheets.
6. Let marshmallows stand at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. For faster results put in the refrigerator.
